Sometimes symbols are contagious – blame your subconscious mind. When life shines a light on a particular thing, your subconscious may find a way to make use of it for you. Today, I offer you a symbol that was recently shared with me.
The other night a friend was asking what spiritual folks might assume about crossing paths with a snake more often than usual.
And one must address such questions to those of the spiritual ilk, because spirituality includes the ability to zoom out to see the bigger picture, as well as drawing conclusions by making connections (AKA divination).
And when we do this kind of thing with events in mundane life, then all of life becomes oracle-like; and if we respond to its messages with alignments in our thinking and actions, then all of life becomes a bit hypnotic.
There's the old idiom of "a snake in the grass". That comes to mind first for me, as one of my favorite ELO songs, "Don't Bring Me Down" plays inside my head.
I remember vividly a dream I had months before my stalker became a stalker (if you missed the stalker story, click here). In the dream, I found a giant, pastel-yellow snake slithering about my bedroom. It looked friendly, but I was still scared of it, and within the dream I kept rationalizing to myself that this snake was harmless. Its face was almost cartoon-like, with a grin and big round eyes. It flashed its pink tongue when it smiled. I then found a smallish pastel pink duffel bag, and attempted wrangling the snake in the bag, a terrifying endeavor. Pale pink and pale yellow – the colors were giving Easter basket vibes. Everything seemed so sweet and innocent on the surface, but there was a lot to fear, and fear was definitely present, though I kept convincing myself otherwise.
A “snake in the grass” represents someone who pretends to be helpful or friendly, but is actually dangerous. Someone capable of striking without warning. A threat hidden in plain sight.
Snakes are associated Hermes, because of his caduceus: two serpents intertwined on a winged staff. These serpents represent duality, and intertwined, the balancing of opposing forces. I associate snakes with Hermes more generally, because of his trickster nature, tendency to protect thieves, and role as liminal messenger between worlds.
Personally, I associate snakes with the witch and the hypnotist: we are also liminal messengers, of the earth, the underworld/unconscious, and the spiritual plane. Like the ourobouros, engaging in perpetual cycles of creation and destruction; transmutation.
And snakes, like witches and hypnotists, are often misunderstood by the masses (In fact, sometimes we are even accused of selling snake oil!)
When I opened Spotify after seeing my friend's snake symbolism query... wanna see what I saw?
See what I mean when I say symbols can be contagious?
2025 is also the year of the Snake in the Chinese zodiac, so if this symbol has been present for you, maybe you're tapping into the collective energy of this time. Either way, you can make the snake work for you.
Snakes slither into your awareness when it's time to grow, let go, transmute, or strike. They may find you on outings, in your dreams, art on the walls, or in your phone-scrolls like me.
Some questions to ask about snakes –– (whether in dreams, waking life, or hypnosis):
Name the first word or feeling that comes to mind when the snake presents itself.
If it scares you: Are you scared of its power, strength, stealth, or something else? (Also, book a session with me!)
How do you feel about your own power and strength?
Are you being called to be more stealthy or strategic?
Is there a truth that you've been denying?
What is ready to be transmuted right now? What can you part with, and what do you want to call in?
Right now is the perfect time to slither out of shed skin and embark on something new.
